Hoshi-Shimada, Diane

Diane was only 18 months old when she, her mother, father, brother, sister, and grandparents were forcibly removed from their home in Oakland to Topaz. Even though she was so young, certain memories of Topaz stand out like walking to the mess hall, the bathrooms, and the awful dust storms. Like many of the toddlers, Diane is grateful for the way parents sheltered their young children during their time in confinement. “We were blessed with having so many good people care for us there. Parents and all, and all the educators to make that time…easier and more precious for all of us, I think.”
